The original narrative was that 2017’s record-breaking losses were supposed to be the final straw. Since then underwriters have been successful in pushing through some price increases in the property catastrophe market, although many would argue more needs to be done.

That is especially true in light of further losses in 2018. What is the current state of play in the reinsurance market? The last two years have seen record-breaking cat losses – are these being priced for accurately? What opportunities exist for the industry? While property cat has attracted most of the market’s attention, how is the casualty reinsurance market faring?

Opportunities abound for nimble underwriters keen to take advantage of the considerable market disruption that currently exists within the sector. With some large companies undergoing significant changes which have left to withdrawals or reductions in certain classes, fleet-footed underwriters can win business and grow their books. There is also the possibility of adding new staff and teams if so desired. Elsewhere, the crackdown on poor performing business in Lloyd’s may lead to opportunities for some US domestic carriers to win business that has been leaving the country.

- What lines of business are proving attractive?
- What else is on the horizon that is attracting the insurance industry's attention?
